Fungal infections occur when microscopic fungi (dermatophytes) invade the skin or the nail plate.
Fungal nail infection, or onychomycosis, is a common non-serious condition. It causes discoloured brittle or thickened nails, often beginning at the edge and spreading. This is usually due to fungi like dermatophytes.
Infection heal slowly and recur frequently.
